Overview
The Snake River White Water trip combines the art of fly fishing with the exhilaration of whitewater adventure against the stunning backdrop of Hoback Canyon. This experience promises the pursuit of trophy trout and the navigation of one of Wyoming's most captivating river landscapes.
The fishery here is dominated by the Native Snake River Fine-Spotted Cutthroat Trout, a subspecies that has evolved to thrive in the turbulent waters of the canyon. In the spring window, warming water temperatures push these fish into the swirling pools and eddies formed by the river's rapids. Anglers are challenged to fish effectively from a moving drift boat, targeting pocket water that rarely sees a fly.
This trip is specifically tailored for advanced anglers who possess proficient casting skills and the ability to maintain balance and focus amidst varying river conditions. The day is physically active, requiring participants to manage gear in dynamic water scenarios and occasionally engage in technical wading at the river's edge during lunch stops.
The logistical advantage of the White Water trip is its proximity to Jackson Hole, yet it offers a wilderness feel that contrasts with the more developed access points of the South Park reach. For anglers who value the adrenaline of the rapids as much as the quality of the catch, this is the trip.
What's Included
Trip Planner
The primary window is April through June, where the higher spring flows provide the necessary water volume for safe drift boat navigation through the canyon's rapids, while simultaneously stimulating the trout's reactionary feeding habits. June is the peak month when water oxygenation and hatch density are at their highest.
Guide's Take
The White Water trip is the most technical engagement we offer on the Snake. It's not just about the fish — it's about the hydraulic environment. You're often casting into an eddy that's only three feet wide while the boat is moving at six miles per hour. It requires total synchronization between the guide's oars and the angler's loop. When you connect with a canyon cutthroat in that environment, it's a pure adrenaline rush.
Common Questions
While you don't need to be a rafter, comfort in a moving boat is essential. This trip is designed for those who enjoy a more active, dynamic day on the water. If you have concerns, talk to us beforehand and we'll help you decide.
Safety is our priority. If spring runoff creates unsafe conditions in the canyon, we will work with you to reschedule or transition to a more stable braided reach of the river at no additional cost.
We recommend a 6-weight rod with a weight-forward floating line to help punch through canyon winds and turn over large, air-resistant attractor flies. We provide all rods and reels if you don't have your own.
The spring window is short and fills quickly. We recommend booking at least 4–6 weeks ahead for peak April through June dates.
