Overview
Discover the unparalleled beauty of America's first national park with Teton Troutfitters. Yellowstone Lake provides anglers with the unique opportunity to fish for native cutthroat in an environment of volcanic peaks and geothermal wonders. This experience promises not only the pursuit of trophy fish but also the serenity of navigating one of the world's most famous national park landscapes.
This specialized trip is best suited for anglers who enjoy sight-casting to cruising fish on high-altitude flats. Because Teton Troutfitters holds one of only ten motorized permits for the park, we can transport you to uncrowded areas of the lake far from the standard tourist paths. Our power boats are outfitted with stand-up casting stations, allowing for optimal visibility and accurate presentations to cruising trout.
In addition to the fantastic fishing, Yellowstone Lake is rich in wildlife, offering the chance to spot grizzly bears, wolves, and bison along the shoreline. It is an expedition for those who seek to fully immerse themselves in the wild of Yellowstone country.
Yellowstone Lake is a massive volcanic caldera defined by its crystal-clear water, geothermal activity, and the native Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout. The journey to the lake is a comprehensive tour of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, passing through Grand Teton National Park and providing world-class wildlife viewing opportunities along the way.

Trip Planner
The Yellowstone Lake season is highly dependent on the ice-off timeline and the thermal stratification of the water. June and July are the prime months — fish move to shallow water to feed after ice-off and the surface hatches are at their peak. By August, fish begin moving deeper, and by September the window narrows to the last major surface activity before winter.
Guide's Take
Yellowstone Lake is like nowhere else on earth. You're in a power boat in the middle of a wilderness, casting to native fish that have never seen a road. The clarity of the water is staggering — you can see every rock, every drop-off, and every cruising trout. It's a pure experience of the high-altitude west.

We primarily use a sight-and-stalk method. We cruise the shallow flats until we spot fish, then cut the motor and drift toward them to allow for a stealthy cast. It's visual, exciting fishing.
We hold one of only ten motorized permits for Yellowstone Lake. Prime June and July dates sell out months in advance — we recommend booking as early as possible.
